Lakers Settle for Silver Medal at Tournament
The Lakers started off the tournament this past weekend with a victory over the host Arran-Elderslie Ice Dogs, but lost two games to the TCDMHA Rebels. Both losses came in a post game shoot-out, one in round robin play and another in the championship final. I do not like to pick on the officials, but a completely blown call during the championship shoot-out cost the Lakers a gold medal.

The tourney started Friday, December 17th in Chesley, when the Lakers took on the Ice Dogs. The lakers played a very impressive, skilled game. The team puck control was incredible, as the Lakers cruised to a 9-1 victory. Scoring for the Lakers where: Dakota Simkins (2), Ernie MacDonnell (2), Liam McIvor (2), Mitch Donais (2), and Dan McIvor (1). Brock Tanner got the lone goal for the Ice Dogs, and Dakota Simkins received the MVP for Shallow Lake.
When the Lakers arrived at the rink Saturday, for the last round robin game scheduled, it was inevitable that along with playing the TCDMHA Rebels in the round robin play, they would also meet them in the championship later that evening.
The round robin game would end in a 2-2 tie after regulation. Mitch Donais and Ernie MacDonnell had scored for the Lakers, and Nick Bruce and Lucas Johnson replied for the Rebels. That meant the tie would be decided by a shoot-out, and it took four players each to determine the winner. Ernie MacDonnell scored for the Lakers, but Braeden Weppler and Brock Wardell scored for the Rebels to give them the 4-3 win. David Whyte was named MVP of this game for Shallow Lake.
The championship game Saturday night saw the same combatants, and again the game would end in a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation play. Riley Field and Dan McIvor had the goals for the Lakers, and Nick Bruce had both goals for the Rebels. However, this time the game would see a 5 minute overtime period, as it was the championship, and the overtime went scoreless. Therefore, we went to another shoot-out. After the first three shooters, the game was now tied at 3, as Ernie MacDonnell scored for the Lakers and Braeden Weppler had replied for the Rebels. This is where it went wrong! Jordan Proctor scored on his try, as the fifth shooter for the Lakers, but the official called it "no goal" because Johnathon Horton, the netminder for the Rebels, had bumped the net off. This clearly should have counted, and given the championship to the Lakers. However, the shoot-out continued, and both goalies where good, but particularly stellar was David Whyte for the Lakers, who again would win MVP honours. It was the eleventh shooter before anyone scored again, but both teams did at the same time. Mitch Donais for the Lakers, and Weppler on his second time thru the line up, as the Rebels only had nine shooters. Now 4-4, it only took one more Rebel to end it, as Brock Wardell would score to clinch a 5-4 victory.
Hey Lakers, you where robbed on that one, but hold your heads high for an awesome weekend. You will definitely get your chance, if you keep working hard like that! Great job all weekend!!!!!
Note from the Lake: Defenceman Derek Johnstone suffered a serious injury in the second game of the tourney after a knee-on-knee collision. He is considered day to day at this point, and will under go more evaluation this week.
