OMHA playdowns - Rd # 2 vs Arran-Elderslie
Lakers grab game # 1 vs Ice Dogs despite penalty trouble
The Lakers opened up round # 2 in OMHA playdowns against their arch from Arran-Elderslie on Thursday night, and just 14 seconds in they found themselves down 1-0 after a weird bounce high off the glass ended up right in front of an open net for a easy tap in. However, as the Lakers settled in they found themselves with a 2-1 lead after the 1st period, as Kaleb "Sudsy" Sutherland and Gavin "Sparky" Gibbons found the back of the net. Ethan Boivin would score twice for Shallow Lake and give them a 4-2 lead late in the second frame. It was then the Lakers ran into penalty trouble, as two players were assessed 4 minute penalties each, and the boys would start the 3rd period with nearly 7 minutes of penalty time to kill off.
With a 5 on 3 powerplay for the Ice Dogs, the visiting team only needed 30 seconds to close the gap to 4-3, and still found themsleves with a 2 man advantage. It was a gutsy effort from the shorthanded crew as they were able to keep the Ice Dogs atbay. Boivin would complete the hat trick for the Lakers and eventually lead his team to a 5-4 victory.
The "DIK" theory will be crucial heading into game # 2. A great game by both clubs, but hopefully the Lakers will learn from taking too many penalties.
Game # 2 set for Chesley on Sunday night at 6:30pm.
