The Shallow Lake Garb and Gear Atom Rep team travelled to Wingham and Blyth this past week for 5 Silver Stick Games.
We started out strong with a 10-0 game against Wingham on Tuesday, December 3rd, in Wingham. Jesse Cunningham got the shut out and Ben Shouldice got the game MVP. Goal scoring by Kirk aka 2K, Gavin, Ben, Aidan and Kalum.
On Saturday, the Lakers had an early start with a 9am game in Wingham against Plattsville. The Lakers started off the scoring with a very quick goal in the first 90 seconds in the first period by Ben Shouldice. Plattsville scored next and it was the end of the 9 game SHUT-OUT streak by Jesse and Ben - yeah the coaching staff can shave off their MOVEMBERS! The penalities started taking over the game (16 mins for each team) and the Lakers had 2 power play goals scored on them. The game ended in a 5-4 loss, hopefully we have learned the only way to retaliate is by scoring, as we all know we can't score from the box. Other Laker goals were Gavin, Matt, and 2K assisted by Quin and Aidan. Ben R played net for the game. Ben S earned the defense coach's pick for a VERY strong game, his best game of the year on D!
We then traveled to Blyth for a 1:25pm game against Lucknow. The Lakers won 6-2 in a hard fought battle. The Lakers stayed out of the box and started to pass the puck again and the scoreboard showed it. Late in the first period, Aidan got the scoring going with a breakaway goal with a nice pass from Cole and 2K. Shortly after Lucknow tied it up. In the second period, the Lakers got 4 straight goals to boost their spirits after the morning loss with a score of 5-1. Lucknow scored one more goal for a 6-2 victory for the Lakers. Other goals scored by Gavin, 2K, Kurt and Cole. Assists by Kalum, Cole, 2K, Gavin, Kurt and Jessica. Jesse played net for the game. The defense coach awarded Jessica his MVP of the game.
With crossed fingers, the Lakers anxiously awaited the news for the wildcard spot. And the 10-0 game paid off and we earned the spot. Back to Wingham for another 9am game versus Plattsville on Sunday morning.
It was another nail biter with each team scoring goals one after another. Ben started off the goal scoring again and then Aidan got a short handed goal to give us the lead. We were scoring but then kind of forgot about the most important part of hockey - TEAM DEFENSE, while spending some time in the penality box with some more undisciplined penalities. It was a see-saw battle all throughout the game. Plattsville scored with 1.3 seconds left to break the tie in the third period. The Lakers move on to the consolation game. Jesse and Ben took a turn in net during this game. Other goal scorers were Ben S with a 2nd goal, Gavin, Kirk. (Sorry no game sheet for the assists).
The final game was the consolation game in Wingham at 12:15pm verus Drayton. It was a tough game for the kids to get up for but as coach Steve said, "we are here so we might as well win it" and that they did. Jesse and Ben split the time in the net. The kids played a pretty strong game and came out on top with a score of 6-2. Goal scorers were Cole and Gavin with 2 each and Ben and Aidan with a single. (Sorry no game sheet for the assists).
A shut out to the defense who may not get their names on the game sheet for assists or goals but we all know that they are certainly a big contributing factor in the success of this team. Thanks to Quin, Matt, Josh, Jesse and Ben for their hard work back there. All 5 players and a goalie need to stop a goal as well as score the goals. Remember there is no I in TEAM, even though Coach Dave did find the I in team.
